Infants do not have a checked baggage allowance, however, adults travelling with an infant are permitted to check in two infant related items (free of charge). This includes customers travelling on seat fares.

If your journey includes other airlines, check their baggage policies as allowances may vary.

Examples of child and infant related items

  • a pram, stroller or buggy
  • a bassinet or portable cot (port-a-cot)
  • a car seat, baby capsule or booster seat

Find everything you need to know about travelling with children.

If you need assistance checking in these items, please speak with our airport check-in staff.

It is your responsibly to ensure child and infant related items are packed securely for travel, with all straps tucked away. To help protect them, we recommend using a travel bag.

Connecting flights

Flying with connections or multiple airlines? Here’s how baggage works

Multi-airline baggage rules

If your journey is booked on a single ticket with more than one airline, the baggage allowance and any excess baggage fees are usually determined by the Most Significant Carrier (MSC).

If you have connecting flights with another airline on the same ticket, your excess baggage fees will generally apply until you collect your baggage.

Prohibited and restricted items

Some items are prohibited, restricted, or require approval before travel. Check what you can and can't bring in your carry-on and checked baggage before you fly.

Track your bags

Know where your bags are at every step of your journey.

Get real-time baggage updates from check-in to arrival on eligible Air New Zealand and Star Alliance partner flights in the Air NZ app.

Mobile phone screens showing flight and baggage details in the Air NZ app.

Baggage support

Delayed, damaged or misplaced

Report baggage that has been delayed, damaged, or hasn't arrived as expected.
