Your personal wheelchair and one additional mobility chair (such as a shower or sports chair) can be carried in the cargo hold at no extra charge. Musical instruments

Accepted Answer

How your instrument travels depend on its size and weight. Carry-on instruments Small musical instruments up to 1 metre long and under 7kg can be carried on board as a standard carry-on item. Your instrument must fit safely under the seat or in the overhead locker. Didgeridoos cannot be carried on board and must be checked in. Checked-in instruments Instruments over 1 metre in length (including handles, wheels, and packaging) may incur a baggage fee. Packing your instrument Pack your instrument in a hard-sided case to help protect it during travel. For stringed instruments, we also recommend loosening the strings before flying. Travelling with a cello Cellos can travel in the cabin if you purchase an extra seat. Our crew will safely secure the cello in the seat next to you. To book a seat for your cello, contact our Contact Centre or speak with your travel agent. Travelling with other airlines If another airline is part of your journey, check their baggage requirements before you travel.

Question 3

Bikes

Accepted Answer

You can bring non-electric bicycles (pedal bikes) on Air New Zealand flights. They count as one checked-in bag. Before you travel You don’t need to deflate your tyres, but your bike will only be accepted if: Handlebars are removed or turned sideways Pedals are removed or turned inward Mountain bike suspension (nitrogen gas) is no more than 200kPa / 29 PSI Tyre inflation cartridges are under 50ml and contain non-flammable gas Packing your bike Your bike must be packed in a bike bag or box. If you don’t have one, bike boxes are available for purchase at New Zealand airports (subject to availability): NZD $35 (Air New Zealand customers) NZD $45 (non-Air New Zealand customers) Size: 80 cm (L) × 144 cm (W) × 31 cm (H) Note: Children’s bikes without a chain don’t need a box but must still be packed safely and securely. Packing tips Place bike and accessories in a bag inside the box Seal the box and label it with your name and phone number Make sure no part of the bike is sticking out

Sports equipment

Sporting items that are under 2m in length and weigh up to 23kg count as one standard checked bag. Items over this size or weight may incur excess baggage charges Maximum weight allowed: 32kg Maximum length on jet aircraft: 2.5m Regional flights within New Zealand On smaller regional aircraft, size limits are stricter: Maximum dimensions: 1.8m (L) × 0.8m (W) × 1.2m (H) Some longer but slim items (up to 2.2m) such as fishing rods, skis and poles may still be accepted. Packing your sports equipment You can pack multiple related items in one sports bag Bags are assessed based on their total weight and length Examples of accepted sporting items The following can be packed as a single item: Bicycle Windsurfer Hang glider Surfboard(s) Snow skis + boots + poles Snowboard + boots + bindings Water skis Golf bag (including clubs and one pair of shoes) If you wish to travel with sports equipment that exceeds the maximum weight and/or dimensions: Within New Zealand: Air New Zealand Cargo may be able to help you send your item as cargo if it weighs over 32kg (70lb). If your item is larger than the maximum dimensions, you'll have to contact a freight forwarder. International travel: Please contact an IATA-approved freight forwarder .

Travelling with pets

Travelling within New Zealand (Domestic) Cats, dogs and small caged birds can travel as checked-in baggage on domestic flights within New Zealand, provided they are in airline-approved pet carriers. For more details, see information on checking in a pet for domestic travel. If you are: Not adding your pet to your booking Travelling with animals that are not domestic pets Travelling with animals for commercial purposes (e.g. racing greyhounds) These must be transported through our National Cargo pet services. Travelling internationally Pets travelling internationally have different travel requirements. We do not accept international pet bookings directly from customers. To arrange international pet travel and obtain pricing information, please contact an approved pet transport provider. Travelling with an empty pet carrier If you are travelling with a pet carrier without an animal inside, it must be checked in as oversize or fragile baggage , as it requires special handling

Tips that can help you save on excess baggage fees

Accepted Answer

Add an extra bag You can usually add extra bags online as late as 30 minutes before a domestic flight and 90 minutes before your international flight. We offer Prepaid Extra Bags on most of our flights, but not on journeys where you fly with more than one airline. Consider your carry-on baggage Could you transfer some items from your checked-in bag to your carry-on bag to get it under the 23kg weight limit? You can bring one small item (such as a handbag or laptop bag) and one carry-on bag onto the aircraft. Remember, your carry-on bag must be under 7kg. Adjust the way you've packed Disassemble items and pack it in a smaller carry bag, if possible. If you have a carry-on bag as well, a prepaid extra bag might be all you need. Check your frequent flyer benefits You may be able to bring additional bags at no charge based on Koru tiers and benefits

Domestic connections within New Zealand

Separate tickets If your domestic flights were booked separately and have different booking references, you may need to collect and re-check your baggage between flights. Domestic connection as part of an international journey If your domestic flight is part of an international itinerary, your international checked-in baggage allowance also applies to the domestic flight.

International connections

If you have an Air New Zealand international flight that connects with another Air New Zealand international flight or an airline we have an agreement with, your baggage will be tagged to go through to your final destination. However, some destinations will require you to pick up your bags, go through Customs, and re-check them at a transfer or check-in desk. United States connections If you’re transiting through the United States, it is mandatory that you must collect your checked baggage when entering the country, even if it has already been tagged to your destination. After clearing customs, you’ll need to re-check your bags at a transfer or check-in desk for your next flight. If you’re unsure, please confirm the baggage process at the counter when you check-in at the airport.
