Supplying to Air New Zealand

Supplying to Air New Zealand

With more than 4,000 suppliers across the airline, we buy a wide range of goods and services – from aircraft, catering, cleaning, construction, digital to security.

Our suppliers are an important part of Air New Zealand. We are proud to partner with businesses of all sizes across Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world.

Becoming an Air New Zealand supplier

We want to partner with a broad range of suppliers who deliver high-quality goods and services and share our commitment to working in an ethical, responsible and more sustainable way.

We are particularly interested in working with businesses that demonstrate a focus on:

  • reducing greenhouse gas emissions
  • minimising waste and developing circular economy solutions
  • supporting sustainable tourism and regional development
  • responsible and sustainable supply chains
  • supplier diversity
  • addressing modern slavery and other human rights risks
  • employee health, safety, diversity, equity, inclusion and engagement
  • supporting te ao Māori, including the principles of kaitiakitanga, whanaungatanga and manaakitanga

Our Supplier Code of Conduct sets out the minimum standards we expect of suppliers when doing business with us.

Our Supplier Code of Conduct

As a large purchaser of goods and services, we want to use our purchasing power for good. We are seeking supplier partners that want to collaborate on managing supply chain risks, minimising harm and generating positive impacts, like ensuring safe labour practices and reducing emissions.

Demonstrating a commitment to ethical and sustainable practices is an important part of maintaining the trust of our customers and communities, and it supports the airline's broader commitment to environmental and social responsibility in our supply chain.

Our Supplier Code of Conduct sets out our minimum supplier standards to achieve this.

Meeting our supplier standards

The Supplier Code of Conduct applies to direct suppliers providing goods and services to the Air New Zealand Group.

We expect suppliers to communicate relevant standards to their teams and subcontractors and take steps to resolve any known instances where the standards are not being met.

Suppliers may meet our standards through their own aligned code of conduct, policies, practices, and supply chain due diligence. However, we also ask suppliers to affirm their commitment to meeting our standards by agreeing to our Supplier Code of Conduct.

Commitment to our Supplier Code of Conduct forms part of doing business with us. This commitment is captured in our supply agreements and is affirmed by suppliers when completing onboarding in our supplier portal (Ivalua).

Managing your supplier information

Ivalua is Air New Zealand's supplier portal. Existing suppliers can log in to Ivalua to manage their information, including company and contact details, Supplier Code of Conduct assurance, certifications and contracts, where applicable.

If an issue is identified

We know that each business will be at a different stage of their sustainability journey and that issues may arise from time to time. We ask our suppliers to maintain an open and honest dialogue with us.

Where an issue is identified, our preferred approach is to work constructively with the supplier to understand the issue and agree appropriate actions to address it.

Where a supplier is unable or unwilling to make necessary improvements to meet our Supplier Code of Conduct, Air New Zealand may exercise its contractual rights, including termination rights where applicable.

Raising a concern

We encourage suppliers and people working in our supply chain to report any actual or suspected breaches of our Supplier Code of Conduct through their Air New Zealand business partner or the confidential Speak Up service.

Concerns raised through our Speak Up service are treated confidentially, and Air New Zealand is committed to investigating concerns appropriately. We prohibit discrimination or retaliation against anyone who raises a concern in good faith.

Supporting a diverse supplier network

Air New Zealand connects communities across Aotearoa and the world, supporting tourism and economic growth. Partnering with diverse New Zealand businesses is another way we can contribute to the prosperity of our country.

Our supplier diversity programme seeks to promote and increase the participation of diverse suppliers in our procurement process, and reflect the communities where we live, work and fly.

A diverse supplier base better reflects the communities we serve and generates community impact and economic opportunities. By intentionally engaging diverse suppliers, we strengthen our supply chain, unlock new capability and innovation, and contribute to more inclusive economic outcomes. This helps us to grow and develop as an airline.

We're aiming to maintain a diverse supplier base of at least 50 suppliers and increase our spend with diverse suppliers to $24 million.

Our actions to support a diverse supplier base include:

  • Influencing procurement - We're embedding supplier diversity considerations into relevant procurement practices.
  • Tracking progress - We've set supplier diversity targets and collect data to understand our supplier base, identify opportunities and track progress.
  • Building capability - We work with suppliers to build capability and capacity to support greater participation in our supply chain.

Who we consider a diverse supplier

Our current focus is on increasing engagement and participation of Māori-owned and Pasifika-owned businesses, as well as social enterprises, in our procurement processes. These groups have been underrepresented in our supply chain.

Māori and Pasifika businesses are defined as businesses with at least 50% ownership by Māori and/or Pasifika people.

Social enterprises are defined as purpose-driven businesses that trade to deliver positive social and/or environmental outcomes, generate most of their revenue through trade that supports their mission, and reinvest profits towards that mission.

Doing business with Air New Zealand

Being a diverse supplier does not guarantee that Air New Zealand will do business with you.

All suppliers must meet our procurement and commercial requirements too. While supplier diversity may be one of the factors considered during sourcing, it does not guarantee selection. Each opportunity is assessed against a comprehensive set of criteria, including capability, value, risk and business requirements.

Being recognised as a diverse supplier

Third-party diversity memberships are not required to do business with Air New Zealand.

However, businesses must be verified to be categorised as a diverse supplier in our supplier portal. Verification helps ensure the integrity of our supplier diversity programme and supports accurate reporting.

Accepted forms of verification include:

Working together on a circular economy

As an airline, we use a wide range of products and materials across our operations that create waste.  We're exploring ways to rethink what we buy and how we use, reuse and repurpose products and materials to reduce waste and support a more circular economy.

A circular economy seeks to :

  1. Eliminate waste and pollution
  2. Keep products and materials in use and retain their value for as long as possible
  3. Regenerate natural systems instead of depleting them

This means considering the full lifecycle of products and materials from their design and manufacture through to their use, reuse and end of life.

We're still developing our approach and are keen to work with suppliers that can help us design, procure and use products and resources in more circular ways.

Read our Supplier Resource to learn more about our approach and tips on how to embed a circular mindset into your business.

Celebrating our suppliers

Tūhono is a Māori word meaning "to connect". The Tūhono Supplier Awards were created to celebrate our suppliers and recognise the integral part they play in delivering on our purpose to enrich our country by connecting New Zealanders to each other and New Zealand to the world. We congratulate all our past winners and look forward to sharing information about the next Tūhono Supplier Awards.
