Wheelchairs and lifting devices
Find out about our services for people with reduced mobility for an accessible and comfortable journey.
Preparing for your journey
To help us arrange the support you need, we recommend booking your travel as early as possible and providing your mobility assistance requirements in advance.
You can request assistance when you book online or through the Air New Zealand app by adding a Special Service Request (SSR).
If the assistance you require is not covered online, please contact our team.
Before you book
Check whether you can travel independently or you need a safety assistant. If you are travelling with another airline, check requirements and request the assistance you need.
Book your flights
When booking your flights, you'll need to make a special service request that best matches your mobility needs so your assistance and seating can be arranged in advance.
If you would like to discuss any seating requirements specific to your needs or the kind of assistance you require is not covered by the options below, please contact us.
At the airpoirt
To ensure you get the support you require arrive early, speak to the check-in team, and share any wheelchair, battery or transfer-device details.
To and from the aircraft
We will help you board using the most suitable transfer method for your flight, including your own support person, a slide board, or the Eagle lifting device where available.
Onboard the aircraft
Support onboard depends on the aircraft type, with aisle-chair access, torso harness support and limits around personal care assistance.
Check wheelchair specifications and battery information
Before you book, please check that your wheelchair or mobility aid meets our size and battery requirements. Aircraft hold space varies, so this helps us confirm your device can be carried safely.
Eagle 2 lifting device for wheelchairs
The Eagle 2 is a lifting device that helps you transfer from a wheelchair into an aircraft seat. Before you book, check the following information to confirm whether it is suitable for your needs and your journey.
You can request the Eagle 2 when you make your booking. If you are booking online, select the wheelchair option for Eagle lifting device when it appears in the special assistance options. If you are booking through an agent, ask for the lifting device directly.
The Eagle 2 is based at select airports and cannot be stowed on board for use during the flight.
