Travelling with your pet in New Zealand Getting ready to travel

Travelling with your pet in New Zealand

Before you request pet travel

You can request travel for your cat, dog, or small caged bird on an Air New Zealand domestic flight.

Before you travel with your pet, there are a few things you’ll need to check. Find out whether your pet can travel with you, what pet carrier you’ll need, how much it costs, what checked-in baggage allowance you need, and what happens at the airport.

Already booked and ready to request pet travel?

If you’ve already booked your New Zealand domestic flight and have your pet, carrier, and travel details ready, you can request for your pet to be added to your booking.

Sign in to your Koru account before completing the form if you can. This helps us verify your details and process your request. You can still submit the form without signing in. If we need more information to verify your booking, we’ll contact you.

Check if your pet can travel

Only pet dogs, cats and small caged birds can travel with you on a New Zealand domestic flight.

Cost and checked baggage allowance

It costs NZ$120 per carrier, per journey for your pet to travel domestically with you. You’ll pay this fee at the airport when you check in your pet.

A journey means one direction of travel. For example, Auckland to Christchurch is one journey.

Check your carrier before you request

Your pet must travel in a pet carrier that meets specific requirements. It must be secure, well ventilated, suitable for air travel, and large enough for your pet to move comfortably.

When you submit your pet request, you’ll need to provide your carrier’s height, width and length. We’ll check your carrier details against your flight, and our airport team will inspect the carrier again when you check in your pet.

For detailed carrier requirements, including carrier size, what can go inside the carrier, when pets can share, and how to secure the carrier, see pet carrier requirements.

Requesting pet travel

If you’ve checked the requirements and have your pet and carrier details ready, you can submit your request.

After you submit your request

After you submit the form, we’ll email you to confirm we’ve received your request. You do not need to reply to this email.

We’ll review your booking, flight details, and pet and carrier information. We’ll email you again to confirm when your pet has been added to your booking, or if we need more information.

If you need to contact us before your request is confirmed, use the case ID in your confirmation email.

If your plans change

Pet travel depends on the aircraft, the route, space in the hold, and your pet and carrier details. If your flight changes or your pet no longer needs to travel with you, here’s what to do.
