Connecting at Auckland Airport

Air New Zealand operates from Zone A on the ground floor at the Auckland International Airport.

The domestic and international terminals are in different locations. You can take a short walk or bus to travel between them.

Connecting at Shanghai

There are specific procedures to follow for travellers transiting through Shanghai/Pudong (PVG) airport.

Transit to/from Lufthansa, British Airways, Austrian Air, Swiss or Eva Air

Air New Zealand customers may be through-checked when transiting via Shanghai/Pudong on the same day with an international onward connection to/from Lufthansa (LH), British Airways (BA), Austrian Air (OS), Swiss International (LX), and Eva Air (BR) airline partners.

When checking in, ensure that your baggage tag shows your final destination, and not just Shanghai 'PVG'

Virgin Atlantic and all other transit passenger

Additional information

China has extended its visa-free policy for New Zealand citizens and citizens of 44 other countries until the end of 2026. Under the policy, New Zealand citizens holding ordinary passports may travel to China for up to 30 days without a visa for purposes including business, tourism, family visits, or transit. The full list of eligible countries is available in the Chinese Embassy's press release. 

Connecting at Houston (IAH)

Transferring to a Domestic or International Flight operated by a Star Alliance Carrier.

Please note: all customers arriving on international flights must collect and clear their bags through U.S. Customs regardless of their final destination (United Airlines)

Additional information

  • All United Airlines flights both International and domestic operate from Terminals E, B and C (and with some exceptions Terminal A as well). Check the Flight Information Board for your connecting flight's terminal and gate
  • United Express operates from Terminal B
  • Other airline domestic flights will operate from Terminal A
  • Non United Airline international flights check-in at Terminal E. United Airlines also has check-in facilities at Terminal E
  • You can access all terminals via the overhead SkyTrain if you are through checked and holding boarding cards for the connecting flight
  • Or, if not through checked, or not holding boarding cards, access is available via the subway Inter Terminal Train
  • Terminals A and B can only be accessed from inside the airport using one of the two trains

Connecting at San Francisco

To connect with another airline at San Francisco you may need to change terminals. This information will help you understand the transfer process.

Air New Zealand operates from the International Terminal at San Francisco International Airport.

The following steps apply to all Air New Zealand passengers connecting at San Francisco

Visit the city between flights

Passengers with a layover of four hours or more may wish to explore San Francisco via the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system, which takes visitors from SFO's International Terminal nearly to the doorstep of several top attractions. Learn more about visiting San Francisco between flights.

Connecting at Los Angeles

Air New Zealand operates from Terminal B at the Los Angeles International Airport. If you're connecting with another airline, you may need to change terminals.

If you're arriving on an international flight, you need to clear US Customs checkpoints before entering the United States and collect your baggage (even if you're in transit and have connecting flights).

Connecting at Vancouver

Air New Zealand operates from the main terminal at the Vancouver International Airport.

If you're arriving on an international flight, you need to clear customs checkpoints and collect your baggage before entering Canada. If you have an international connection to a destination outside North America, your baggage does not need to be collected and it will be transferred automatically.

Connecting at New York

Air New Zealand operates from Terminal 1 at the John F. Kennedy International Airport. If you're connecting with another airline, you may need to change terminals.

If you're arriving on an international flight, you need to clear US Customs checkpoints before entering the United States and collect your baggage (even if you're in transit and have connecting flights).
