Air New Zealand has a code share and frequent flyer relationship with Virgin Atlantic.
Air New Zealand has code share on Virgin Atlantic flights between San Francisco and London-Heathrow.
Our partnership with Virgin Atlantic Airways means Airpoints™ members can earn and redeem Airpoints Dollars™ on these codeshare flights and other Virgin Atlantic services, and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club members can earn miles on Air New Zealand services.
Status Points are not able to be earned on Virgin Atlantic operated flights, even if travel is on an Air New Zealand code share flight number.
Airpoints Elite & Gold members that travel on an Air New Zealand flight number operated by Virgin Atlantic are able to access a number of benefits. To ensure access to the benefits make sure you select flights with the Air New Zealand “NZ” designator or ask your travel agent to do so.
The Air New Zealand Flight numbers operated by Virgin Atlantic that frequent flyer benefits are available are:
- NZ4162 and NZ4164 San Francisco to London
- NZ4161 and NZ4163 London to San Francisco
Frequent flyer benefits are not available on the domestic UK Virgin Atlantic operated flights.
Airpoints Elite and Gold members travelling on an Air New Zealand flight number operated by Virgin Atlantic between London-Heathrow and San Francisco are entitled access to Virgin Atlantic’s lounges at London-Heathrow and San Francisco.
All you need to do is present your valid Airpoints Elite or Gold card.
Note: When travelling Virgin Atlantic operated flights the Virgin Atlantic lounge must be used (eg the Star Alliance lounge in London Heathrow cannot be accessed when travelling on a Virgin Atlantic domestic UK flight). There is also no access to lounges when travelling on Virgin Atlantic domestic UK flights departing from other UK airports.
Air New Zealand does not have Air New Zealand code share flight numbers on Virgin Atlantic operated flights between London-Heathrow and Hong Kong, Shanghai, Vancouver and Los Angeles. Airpoints Elite and Gold members travelling on these Virgin Atlantic flights in are not entitled to use the Virgin Atlantic lounges at those airports.
Other Gold and Elite benefits
In addition to lounge access, Airpoints Elite and Gold members travelling on an Air New Zealand flight number operated by Virgin Atlantic in Economy & Premium Economy, excluding domestic UK Virgin Atlantic operated flights, will also receive other benefits on the presentation of their valid Elite & Gold card.

Certain booking classes on Partner Airlines are not eligible to earn Airpoints Dollars. On a Partner Airline flight, Airpoints Dollars may be earned on a flight by flight basis rather than a journey basis.
