We all have a carbon impact in today's world. There are things we can all do to reduce carbon emissions. But even after reducing emissions as much as possible, it isn't currently possible to eliminate our carbon footprint.
A way of negating the remaining carbon emissions is to pay for emissions reductions made through environmentally beneficial projects.
Carbon emissions can be removed from the atmosphere by landowners who invest in permanent forestry projects. Carbon emissions can also be reduced by creating sustainable, low-energy energy solutions for communities. This concept is known as carbon offsetting and the emission reductions generated from these projects are measured and transacted as carbon credits.
Anyone can purchase carbon credits and use them to offset, or balance, their own carbon emissions.
In simple terms, offsetting one tonne of carbon means there will be one less tonne of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than there would otherwise have been.
Air New Zealand has partnered with ClimateCare to deliver an easy and transparent carbon offsetting programme for our customers.
We want to help our customers take a small action that can lead to great outcomes.
When booking your Air New Zealand flight on our New Zealand website, we automatically calculate the carbon emissions for your flight and the cost to offset them under FlyNeutral. This information is displayed for you as part of your booking.
If you decide to offset the carbon emissions from your flight, the cost of the carbon credits will be added to the total amount paid for the flight.
To learn more about how the carbon emissions are calculated under FlyNeutral, what projects Air New Zealand supports, and other details about carbon offsetting with Air New Zealand, see the FAQs.
If you decide after you have booked your flight or after you have taken your journey with Air New Zealand that you want to offset the carbon emissions from your flight, you can use our carbon offset calculator.
FlyNeutral also makes understanding carbon emissions and offsetting easier and more visible for our corporate and government customers.
With FlyNeutral, you can request a report setting out the carbon emissions from your organisation's Air New Zealand travel. You can have clarity about how those emissions are calculated and the ability to easily and confidently offset them, something our business customers tell us they want help with. FlyNeutral delivers complete transparency as to the price of the carbon credits purchased for offsetting and the carbon emission reduction projects generating those carbon credits. With FlyNeutral, organisations can also offset other organisational carbon emissions, beyond Air New Zealand air travel.
If your organisation has a dedicated Air New Zealand account manager, contact them for a customised carbon emissions report and find out how you can offset your organisation's emissions.
If you are an Air New Zealand business customer, and you already know your organisational emissions for your flights or other emissions sources, and you want to offset those emissions, you can complete a Customer Offset Request which will be processed by our carbon offsetting partners, ClimateCare.
For business travellers who access Air New Zealand's Business Services, we are developing further emissions reporting options in the near future.
