Earning Airpoints Dollars™ and Status Points

Trans-Tasman flights with an NZ flight number

On trans-Tasman flights if you book a flight with a NZ flight number, even if it is operated by Virgin Australia (e.g. NZ101 or NZ7000) you will earn Airpoints Dollars and Status Points based on the earning rates in the Air New Zealand flights section of the Airpoints Dollars and Status Points earning rates look up table.

Note: As a result of our recent announcement relating to the end of the trans-Tasman alliance, the ability to earn Airpoints Dollars and Status Points on Virgin Australia operated flights will change.

If you have a booking made prior to 4 April 2018 for travel on a Virgin Australia operated trans-Tasman flight with an NZ flight number, or have been re-accommodated onto an Air New Zealand operated flight, any Airpoints Dollars or Status Points relating to these flights will be honoured.

Trans-Tasman or domestic Australian flights with a VA flight number

If you travel on Virgin Australia flight numbers (e.g. VA101 or VA8000) across the Tasman or on a flight operated by Virgin Australia domestically within Australia you will earn Airpoints Dollars based on the earning rates in the Partner flights section of the Airpoints Dollars earning rates look up table. Status Points are not able to be earned on Virgin Australia flight numbers.

If you have a booking made prior to 4 April 2018 for travel on a Virgin Australia operated trans-Tasman or domestic Australia flight with a Virgin Australia flight number, any Airpoints Dollars relating to these flights will be honoured.

Trans-Tasman and domestic flights

Our Alliance with Virgin Australia means you can use your Airpoints Dollars to book any seat available for sale as an award ticket on an Air New Zealand flight number operated by Virgin Australia when travelling across the Tasman or within Australia.

Domestic Australia lounge access

Elite, Gold and Koru members can use the Virgin Australia domestic lounges when travelling on any domestic Virgin Australia flight. Simply show your boarding pass and your Elite, Gold or Koru membership card at the entrance.

Virgin Australia domestic lounges within Australia are located in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Cairns, Canberra, Gold Coast, Mackay, Alice Springs, Darwin and Perth. The Gold Coast lounge is before immigration but can be used prior to both international and domestic flights.

Elite members may invite up to three guests (travelling on the same service and subject to space) into Virgin Australia lounges, while Gold and Koru members may invite one guest. Children aged 2 years and over travelling with you will be included as part of your guest allowance in Virgin Australia Lounges.

All Elite and Gold members flying trans-Tasman on a Virgin Australia flight will enjoy the following benefits:

  • Lounge access
  • Priority check-in
  • Priority baggage
  • Additional checked baggage allowance (one additional piece up to 23kg when buying a fare that includes checked baggage).
    • Note: Additional checked baggage allowance only applies when traveling on a Virgin Australia operated flight with a NZ flight number (e.g. NZ7000)
  • Carry on baggage allowance - carry on (two bags up to 7kg each)
  • Priority seating (if available)
  • Priority boarding

Koru members flying trans-Tasman on a Virgin Australia flight will enjoy the following benefits:

  • Lounge access
  • Priority check-in
  • Priority baggage
  • Priority boarding
  • Additional checked baggage allowance (one additional piece up to 23kg when buying a fare that includes checked baggage).
