Rotorua is a geothermal wonderland with some of the world's most accessible boiling mud pools, sulphurous springs and spectacular geysers. It's not surprising that it's been a popular spa area for visitors since the 1880s, and before that the Maori.

Visit the NZ Maori Arts & Crafts Institute and follow the walkways past the colourful boiling pools and springs and New Zealand's most spectacular geysers, the Prince of Wales' Feathers and Pohutu. You can't swim here, but if you want to immerse yourself in therapeutic pools, the Polynesian Spa, with over 30 pools and its range of massage and other treatments, is the place to go.
For sweeping views over Lake Rotorua, take a ride in the gondola part way up Mount Ngongotaha, then descend again in the luge for your adrenaline rush.
