Bay of Islands

To see where European settlement dramatically began in New Zealand, the beautiful Bay of Islands is the place to start.

As the name suggests, this area is also a great place for game fishing, dolphin watching and other water based activities.

From Paihia it's a short ferry ride to the picturesque historic town of Russell, New Zealand's first capital. Take time to admire the magnificent views from Waitangi, north of Paihia, where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840. Otherwise, exploring the outer islands is easy. Board a boat for the 'Hole in the Rock' cruise, or chase your very own Marlin in the tradition of Zane Grey.
