Summer is a spectacular time to enjoy New Zealand.
The days are long and sunny and the evenings mild. Summer is an excellent time for day treks in the bush, walking the length of a beach, or a round of golf. New Zealand's gorgeous beaches are ideal for swimming, sunbathing, surfing, boating, and water sports during summer.
New Zealand's climate varies from subtropical in the north to temperate in the south. Most of the country enjoys abundant sunshine of over 2,000 hours per year, with the sunniest areas, including the Bay of Plenty, Hawke's Bay and Nelson, enjoying in excess of 2,350 hours. As New Zealand observes daylight saving, daylight lasts up until 9.00pm during summer months.
New Zealand experiences relatively little air pollution compared to many other countries, which makes the UV rays in our sunlight very strong during summer months. To avoid sunburn, visitors should wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats, even if cloudy, especially during the hottest part of the day (11am - 4pm).
In summer a light jacket or sweater should be included in your luggage should the weather turn cooler or you visit higher altitudes. You can expect some rain, so include a light rainproof jacket or coat. In general, dress is informal and relaxed on most occasions. Smart casual clothes are accepted at most restaurants and nightspots.
Summer is warm and perfect for all water activities with temperatures averaging 75-90°F/24-32°C. However, anytime of the year the temperatures only vary by about 20 degrees over most of the country. On the South Island, the months of November to May offer the best weather ranging from springtime highs of mid 60's to summertime highs of 70's plus degrees. The summer climate in the mountains is a very dry heat and it does not rain much during these months. From mid December through the beginning of February, it is party time for local holidaymakers and summer school holidays.
Christmas is in summertime and is the one really big holiday of the year, combining the main summer break and traditional celebrations. Many New Zealanders celebrate Christmas on the beach, singing carols around the BBQ with the summer holidays stretching ahead.
Enjoy the best time of year, visit New Zealand this summer!
