Reflecting people's incredible generosity towards those affected by the tsunami, several of the auction items sold for more than their retail value.

These included:

Auction Item Winning Bid Retail Value
Flight and accommodation package for two at Millbrook Resort $5,950 $2,900
Flight and accommodation package for two at Blanket Bay $5,050 $4,800
Flight and accommodation package for two at Huka Lodge $3,740 $3,400
Two Business Class airfares to Melbourne $4,310 $3,720
Two Business Class airfares to Melbourne $3,970 $3,720

A once in a lifetime, three month unlimited use international Business Class travel pass for two people raised the highest bid, going for an impressive $28,500.

"It was the first time we have done something like this and to watch the heavy bidding take place clearly demonstrated that New Zealanders are keen to support the tsunami relief activities," said Air New Zealand Managing Director and CEO Ralph Norris.

"Every cent raised is being shared equally between Red Cross, World Vision and Oxfam who are doing an outstanding job supporting those affected by the recent tsunami."

World Vision Executive Director Helen Green said the giving had gone way beyond the agency's expectations.

"The airfare auction shows the tsunami need not be all about doom and gloom. People are finding innovative, enjoyable and fun ways to give. It's this kind of positive attitude which brings hope even in the direst circumstances.

"All credit to Air New Zealand for taking the initiative to provide this kind of opportunity."

30 double airfare and travel packages including a range of First and Business Class international airfares, as well as holiday packages to some of New Zealand's most exclusive lodges, were heavily bid for during the ten day auction which closed on Sunday evening.

More than 156,000 page views were generated and 2,798 bidders were active across the auction items.

"This on-line auction has captured the imagination of the public, especially those who bid generously for the travel packages," said Executive Director of Oxfam New Zealand Barry Coates.

"It comes on top of the support that Air New Zealand has provided in helping relief workers fly to the tsunami-affected countries. Air New Zealand's support will be important in meeting the crucial challenges of preventing the outbreak of disease and rebuilding devastated communities."

Money raised through the auction will be used for a variety of tasks according to the Red Cross.

"The airfare auction showed ingenuity by Air New Zealand and the money raised will go a long way to assist Red Cross recovery and reconstruction efforts in South Asia," says New Zealand Red Cross Acting Director General Terry Butt.

"The contribution of the New Zealand public and corporates such as Air New Zealand cannot be under-estimated."
