Encompassing the best of everything, from the shores of Lakes Te Anau and Manapouri and their peaceful beech forest backdrops to the exposed alpine tussock lands, the Kepler Track has something for everyone.
Ideal for entry-level tramping and with no transport hassles, this 60km circuit can be enjoyed over 3 or 4 days. Well-maintained tracks soon lead you away from your everyday world to sidle around the rocky peak of Mt Luxmore, hike along ridges and down into the lush Iris Burn valley. Spacious huts offer stunning alpine panoramas and cosy evenings after your day’s exertions.
An incredible wilderness experience right on Te Anau’s doorstep, the Kepler Track is a fantastic opportunity for families, groups and individuals to experience the most accessible of Fiordland’s Great Walks.
Hut and campsite bookings are essential during the Great Walks season (late October to late April).
The Kepler Track is located in Fiordland National Park, in the south west of the South Island, and is part of Te Wahipounamu - South West New Zealand World Heritage Area.
The track starts at the Kepler Track car park, 5 km from Te Anau. Access is either by road or a 50 minute walk from the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre. Alternatively, there is an entry point at Rainbow Reach, a 10 minute (12 km) drive from Te Anau.
Shuttle buses provide a daily service to entry and exit points on the track during the Great Walks season (late October to late April). A scheduled boat service also offers transport to Brod Bay.
