Excess baggage charges apply when a customer's checked-in baggage exceeds their free baggage allowance.

The charges stated within this section apply when Air New Zealand baggage allowances and charges apply. Charges are applied based on the departure country of each flight unless otherwise stated.
If you are travelling with excess baggage, please remember to allow sufficient time to complete the necessary formalities at check-in. Please be aware that your excess baggage will be carried subject to space availability on your flight and fees are therefore collected at the airport.
As an alternative to paying excess baggage charges you may wish to consider sending any clothes or personal items as unaccompanied baggage.
Travel to/from the US
For travel originating in the US to any destination
For travel where the final destination on your ticket is a US city, e.g. Auckland to Los Angeles via Nadi (applies to both one way or return journeys). This does not include travel to/via the US en route to another country e.g. London to Auckland via Los Angeles even if stopping in Los Angeles.
United States legislation requires that all passengers whose travel starts in the US or who are travelling to the US as their final destination will have the same carrier’s baggage allowances and charges applied for the entire ticketed journey. The legislation also requires that the first carrier on the ticketed journey as determined by the flight number (i.e. the marketing or code carrier which may be different from the operating carrier) determines the baggage allowance and charges to be applied. This means that even though you may have an Air New Zealand ticket with at least one Air New Zealand flight, the baggage allowances and charges that apply could be those of another carrier.
When the first flight on your ticket has an Air New Zealand flight number (i.e. NZxxx) then in most instances the Air New Zealand baggage allowances and excess charges will apply to your entire journey. The exception to this is where the longest (i.e. most significant) flight in the first checked portion of your journey does not have an Air New Zealand flight number. In this instance the baggage allowances and charges of the carrier ticketed on the longest sector will apply to your entire journey,
If a carrier other than Air New Zealand is the first carrier on your ticket then that carrier determines the baggage allowances and charges that apply for the entire ticketed journey. That carrier may choose to apply their own baggage allowances and charges or apply those of the “Most Significant Carrier” (MSC).
If you travel in both directions in the same class of travel the same allowance and charges will apply in both directions. An exception to this is if you travel in a different class or fare product in each direction (e.g. Business Premier and Economy or Seat and Seat + Bag), the same carrier’s allowance and charges will still apply, but they may differ as they will be based on the applicable fares and classes of travel purchased.
If your travel comprises more than one ticket, the baggage rules apply to each of those tickets separately, in which case it is very possible that you could have different allowances and excess charges etc for each of those separately ticketed journeys.
Please refer to your electronic ticket which shows your checked baggage allowance and which carrier’s allowances and charges apply.
If Air New Zealand is indicated as being the carrier whose baggage rules apply you can check excess rates by selecting the departure point of the first flight on your ticket from the menu options to the right.
For all other long haul international travel including travel to/via the US en route to another country, e.g. Auckland to London with either a transit or stop over in Los Angeles.
Baggage allowances and charges may differ between different carriers and throughout your journey depending on if travel is entirely on Air New Zealand flights or a combination of carriers.
When travel is entirely on Air New Zealand ticketed and operated flights, Air New Zealand baggage allowances and charges will apply and any additional charges will be based on your checked-in journey on the day of travel.
When travel includes both Air New Zealand and other airlines including Air New Zealand codeshare flights and there is at least one US city shown on your ticket, the baggage allowances and charges applied will be those of the carrier operating the longest sector in the checked in journey; this is known as the "Most Significant Carrier" (MSC).
When travel includes both Air New Zealand and other airlines including Air New Zealand codeshare flights and there is no US city shown on your ticket.
When checking in with Air New Zealand, Air New Zealand baggage allowances and charges will be applied. Please retain your baggage receipt to show to your connecting airline as evidence of excess already paid as they may apply additional baggage charges. Where additional charges are applied Air New Zealand is not liable for such charges.
When checking in with another carrier the other carriers allowances and charges will apply.
If your flight is operated by an Air New Zealand partner airline, you will need to check the rates with the airline operating the service.
Exception: Air New Zealand's excess baggage charges apply to Air New Zealand flights operated by Virgin Australia (NZ 7000 - 7999 flight numbers). Find out more about the trans-Tasman alliance.
Prepaid Extra Bags
To avoid paying the full airport excess baggage rate, Air New Zealand has introduced prepaid Extra Bags, which allows you to purchase extra bags in addition to your free checked baggage allowance (to a maximum of three bags in total, including additional frequent flyer benefit, if applicable), for a lot less than what you'd pay at the airport.
Extra Bags are only available when Air New Zealand baggage allowances and charges apply that are on Air New Zealand operated flights and can be selected while making a booking online, through the Contact Centre, or added to an existing booking up to 3 hours before your flight for international travel and 30 minutes for domestic New Zealand travel.
