Air New Zealand has a strategic agreement with Cathay Pacific for flights between Auckland and Hong Kong.
Earning and spending of Airpoints Dollars on Cathay Pacific will commence from 31 January 2013.
Earning Airpoints Dollars and Status Points
From 31 January 2013 on flights between Auckland and Hong Kong if you book an Air New Zealand flight with an NZ flight number (e.g. NZ80 or NZ4990), even if it is operated by Cathay Pacific, you will earn Airpoints Dollars based on the Airpoints Dollars Earned on Air New Zealand Flights table.
You will also earn Status Points for flights between Auckland and Hong Kong booked on Air New Zealand with an NZ flight number (eg NZ80 or NZ4990).
If you travel on Cathay Pacific flight numbers (eg CX117 or CX7401) between Auckland and Hong Kong you will earn Airpoints Dollars based on the Airline Partner earn chart.
If you travel on any other Cathay Pacific flight you will not earn Airpoints Dollars or Status Points.
Spending Airpoints Dollars
Our strategic agreement with Cathay Pacific will give you even more options for Airpoints™ reward travel between Auckland and Hong Kong.
From 31 January 2013 you can also book any seat available for sale as an award ticket on an Air New Zealand numbered flight, even if this is operated by Cathay Pacific. These flights will be numbered:
- NZ35, NZ38, NZ80, NZ85 or NZ87 Air New Zealand operated flights between Auckland - Hong Kong
- NZ4990-NZ4995 operated by Cathay Pacific between Auckland and Hong Kong
You will also be able to book a Partner Reward flight between Auckland and Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific. These rewards tickets are limited and subject to availability, so get in early to avoid disappointment. As with other reward travel, any additional taxes, levies or surcharges cannot be paid for using Airpoints Dollars.

* Cathay Pacific reward tickets are only available on flights between Auckland and Hong Kong. Award travel between Auckland and Hong Kong can be booked as an Air New Zealand award flight.
Lounge Access
You will continue to enjoy lounge access when you travel with Air New Zealand between Auckland and Hong Kong. The alliance means Gold Elite and Gold members will have lounge access when travelling on an Air New Zealand numbered flight operated by Cathay Pacific (flight numbers NZ4990 to NZ4995) departing from Hong Kong to Auckland or a flight between Auckland and Hong Kong that is connecting to or from a Cathay Pacific or Dragonair flight to or from Beijing or Shanghai.
Koru members will access the Thai Airways business class lounge in Hong Kong from 1 February 2013 when departing from Hong Kong to Auckland on either Air New Zealand or Cathay Pacific operated flights with an Air New Zealand flight number (eg NZ80 or NZ4990).
Other Gold and Gold Elite Benefits
To receive Gold and Gold Elite Benefits when flying on a Cathay Pacific operated flight between Auckland and Hong Kong you must be booked through Air New Zealand. These flights will be numbered:
- NZ35, NZ38, NZ80 or NZ85Air New Zealand operated Auckland Hong Kong flights
- NZ4990-NZ4995 Cathay Pacific operated Auckland Hong Kong flights
Airpoints Gold Elite and Gold members who book an Air NZ code share flight operated by Cathay Pacific will continue to receive the same (or materially similar) loyalty benefits to those that they usually receive on Air NZ operated flights.
These benefits include lounge access, priority check-in, priority boarding, priority airport standby, priority baggage, extra baggage allowance and priority seating.
Upgrades cannot be requested on any flight that is operated by Cathay Pacific.
Benefits offered by each airline when their members travel on their own marketed and operated flights may differ from the reciprocal benefits provided.
Baggage
Air New Zealand and Cathay are aligning their baggage allowances on Auckland - Hong Kong for Alliance passengers travelling point to point, adopting Air New Zealand’s more generous baggage entitlements.
If you are booked through Cathay Pacific (eg CX117 or CX7401) you will not be entitled to any additional baggage allowance benefits over and above what is included with your fare.
Carry on up to 7kg
Gold Elite and Gold Airpoints members are able to take two carry-on bags up to 7kgs each when travelling on flights booked through Air New Zealand and operated by Cathay Pacific.
Checked-in 1 piece up to 23kg
Gold Elite and Gold Airpoints members booked onto an Air New Zealand flight operated by Cathay Pacific (e.g. NZ4990) are able to take an additional piece of checked-in baggage up to 23kgs if travelling on a fare product that allows bags.
